An aging leader of a mega church in present-day Nashville loses his faith and convinces his followers that God wants him preserved by cryogenics when he dies - for a mission to the future. He gets his wish and 140 years after dying is reanimated.
One has to be careful, of course, what one wishes for His church has become a major faith, and millions of faithful view him as a prophet. Further, the US has fragmented into spheres of influence controlled by various faiths. And, oh yes, the leaders of his church view him as a threat, had no desire to reanimate him - it was done illicitly - and wish to return him to 'suspended animation.'
Into the ensuing sci-fi adventure story, the novel weaves reflections on faith and its corruption, along with satire on efforts to erode church/state separation.

This comes from a small press, Penumbra Publishing in Lexington, KY, so you probably won't see it hyped much, or in most bookstores, but it's available from Amazon or from the publisher (penumbrapublishing.com), and imho it's well worth your buying it. Rev. James Stuart Sloan, best known as "Jimmy Stu," is the founder and minister of the Church of the Living Lord in Nashville, TN, and while he had started his ministry feeling a strong connection with God, as the years passed this feeling of connection dwindled and finally disappeared entirely. After the death of his wife and three heart attacks, he feels the end is near and preaches a sermon on Easter asking for donations to enable him to be cryonically preserved against the time in the future when he can be revived. And then, 142 years later, he wakes up... And there begins a slam-bang adventure story, very well-paced, with engaging characters (as well as some rather stock villains), as Jimmy Stu (in a body like his when he was about 25) learns (drawn out over the next couple of chapters) that the Church of the Living Lord, under the aegis of his trustees, has become a major denomination, and that religious groups (if you count Secular Humanists as a religious group) have replaced political parties in the US government, and that states' rights have become so strong that crossing state lines requires passports, customs, and the like (I presume after the Constitution is amended, since it prohibits anything like that). The COTLL, in fact, controls pretty much the entire Upper South, along with a strong presence in the southern parts of Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. And their Prime Minister didn't want Jimmy Stu revived, though the technology had been available for 14 years. COTLL security tries to capture him shortly after he's revived, but he and two of the people who'd revived him escape. This isn't a great book, but it's a very good one that probably deserved a better publisher--I've read a lot worse from outfits like Tor and Baen.Product details

Jimmy Stu Lives! edition by Kent McDaniel Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I found this a quick read, as I said. It had enough action, enough world building and enough personalities to keep my interest. It had ideas that were thought provoking too. The novel adds to the answer for what happens when we lose faith; what happens when faith gets corrupted; and what happens when God works in mysterious ways, even among the faithless.
As I read "Jimmy Stu Lives" I kept thinking to myself, "This would make a great mini-series for science fiction fans. The futuristic concepts have credibility with actual science and are used in such a way that one wishes we had them already. I especially liked the vehicles that allowed the characters to move through space and avoid the traffic.
Jimmy Stu, the main character is a minister whose faith has begun to wane so when he dies, he wants his body to be preserved so that he can be resurrected at some later date. Therein lies the crux of the problem as not everyone wants him brought back to life. This begins the story and we are provided with an interesting look to the future concerning religion, government, and technology.
The author writes with great authenticity when part of the story moves to Tennessee and Kentucky. The reader can hear the words of someone who has lived in the south; especially southern Illinois. He understands the roughness but also the generosity of people living in that area.
Does Jimmy Stu get away from those who mean to harm him? You need to read it for yourself to find out. Meanwhile, I keep thinking about what actors could play what roles in the mini-series.
Poor Jimmy Stu. He is living a minister's worst nightmare. It is Easter morning and he doesn't have a sermon and he has lost his faith. With all of the pressure to WOW the congregation he uses the sermon to begin a campaign to raise money to be cryogenically preserved so he can do God's special ministry in the future. Over 100 years later the reader finds out that his reanimation has worked. Jimmy Stu lives, and that is where the action begins. Jimmy Stu and the crew that has been responsible for his reanimation find that their lives are in danger. Jimmy Stu has to be immediately ready for a world of androids, flying motorcycles and vans and holograms and a life on the run. He is horrified to hear that churches have taken the place of political parties and the United States is on the brink of falling apart. Even more bewildering is that Jimmy Stu learns that the leaders of the very church he started, The Church of the Living Lord, are the ones who want him dead. The plot is full of twists and turns leaving the reader anxiously waiting to see what will happen next.
Kent McDaniel has written a wonderful novel, easy to read, and difficult to put down. Personally, I'm waiting for the next installment.
JIMMY STU LIVES! by Kent McDaniel (Penumbra Publishing, 2012) - Ah, the uneasiness of picking up a book by a friend, self-published on line at that. Not to worry. Friend Kent McDaniel has given us a good read here. Ten minutes before his televised Easter Sunday service, Nashville mega church pastor Jimmy Stuart Sloan finds himself without a sermon and faith, too. He still grieves for his late wife and his faith is tenuous, at best. He asks his followers to help fund his cryogenic preservation so he can continue God's work in the future. The future comes a century or so later with the church embroiled integrally in national politics and intrigue. Jimmy Stu finds himself part of mess with - literally and figuratively - a price on his head. He doesn't know which of his followers to trust, especially some appear to be more interested in his possible demise or incarceration than his relgion. McDaniel paints some interesting future geographic and political boundaries to help the story along.
